Coalition forces in Yemen foil Houthi boatbomb attack

RIYADH: Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen intercepted and destroyed a remote-controlled boat rigged with explosives in Hodeidah governorate on Sunday, the alliance’s joint command said.

In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the coalition said the bomb-laden boat was launched by the Iran-backed Houthi “terrorist” militia.

IPMAN Launches Waterways Surveillance To Check Oil Theft

UK team helps free Iranian hostages from Somali pirates

LONDON: A British team has helped secure the release of three Iranian sailors from Somali pirates, amid heightened tensions between the UK and Iran over the case of the imprisoned charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

The deal for the sailors’ release involved a ransom payment of $180,000 — brokered by the UK-based Hostage Support Partnership — which was coordinated by Kenya-based former British diplomat John Steed in partnership with Leslie Edwards, a UK-based hostage-negotiation specialist. It ends the longest-running maritime hostage situation in the region to date, with the three men having spent five-and-a-half years in captivity.

Troops Rescue 13 Foreigners, 4 Nigerians Abducted by Pirates in N’Delta

15. Troops of Operation DELTA SAFE have sustained the aggressive fight against economic sabotage in the zone with tremendous successes. For the month of August, subsidiary Operation SILENT HEAT was launched by Operation DELTA SAFE on 1 August 2020 for 90 days. The objective of the operation was to protect critical installations, Key Points and Vital Points as well as combat all forms of illegalities/crimes in the area. The operation is conducted in order to maintain conducive environment for oil and gas industries as well as other economic activities to thrive.
16. Since the activation of Operation SILENT HEAT, several arrests and deactivation of various militant camps have been made. Also, significantly, it was during the course of the operation that on 19 August 2020, Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH intercepted a speed boat with 13 foreigners made of 7 Russians and 6 Ukrainians alleged to have been kidnapped by pirates in Lome waters. The 13 kidnapped foreigners as well as 4 Nigerians on the speed boat have been handed over to Defence Intelligence Agency on 24 August 2020 for further necessary action.

Inter-agency collaboration surest route to maritime security – NIMASA D-G

Dr Bashir Jamoh, the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA), on Monday said teamwork among agencies was the surest means to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Jamoh made this known in a statement signed by Mr Philip Kyanet, the Head, Corporate Communications, NIMASA. According to him, he visited the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammed Babandede, to intensify the quest for cooperation among relevant government agencies in a bid to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Asian ‘pirates’ intercepted by PNG Navy

Media reports from Papua New Guinea suggest that the country’s Navy intercepted a group of ‘pirates’ whilst on routine patrol.

The articles state that 8 crew on board an unnamed vessel, believed to be Chinese, were behaving suspiciously in PNG waters. The crew reportedly refused to allow PNG Navy on board, but ‘aggressive action’ was taken. EMTV reported that in 2017, the same vessel was allegedly intercepted in Milne Bay and cocaine was seized from it.

Incident Alert Incidents at Batangas Anchorage, Philippines

Within an interval of seven days, two incidents of armed robbery against ships occurred while they were berthed/anchored in Batangas, Philippines. In both incidents, the perpetrators demonstrated violence toward crew with a knife.

In the first incident on 14 Aug at 1000 hrs, the perpetrator entered the cabin of the general steward, threatened him by pointing a long knife at him and stole his personal belongings. The perpetrator left the ship immediately via the mooring lines in a small unmarked blue motor banca stationed at the astern of the ship.

Naval chief launches Joint Maritime Information Coordination Centre

The inauguration ceremony of the new state-of-the-art Joint Maritime Information Coordination Centre (JMICC) was held in Karachi on Friday, and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi graced the occasion as chief guest and inaugurated the new setup.

The spokesman for the navy said in a statement that the JMICC functioned as a nerve centre to harmonise the efforts of all maritime-related organisations and agencies. It helped generating a coordinated response to maritime security challenges within Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), primarily through information-sharing and inter department/ agency coordination, he added.

Taiwan detains suspect in shocking case of murder at sea

Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) A Chinese boat captain, who is suspected of ordering the killing of at least four unarmed men at sea some six years ago, was detained by Taiwanese authorities on Saturday soon after he entered Kaohsiung port on a fishing boat.

The 43-year-old suspect was arrested when the Seychelles-flagged Indian Star docked in the southern port city at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, the Coast Guard Administration’s investigation unit in Fengshan District said.
