Switzerland drags Nigeria to Intl tribunal over seized ship

Switzerland has asked an international court to order Nigeria to release a Swiss-flagged oil tanker, its cargo and crew that have been detained off Port Harcourt for the past 16 months.

The Swiss foreign ministry said in a statement weekend that it had appealed on May 21 to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to order Nigeria to release the San Padre Pio tanker.

Nigerian Navy detains ship for ‘suspicious movement’

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder on Tuesday said its operatives arrested a motor tanker, MT Arowolo, over the vessel’s alleged ‘suspicious movement’ around Onne Anchorage in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The navy said the anchorage was known in security circles as a notorious zone for illegal activities by oil thieves.

Maritime crimes: 80 vessels arrested in 3 years – Naval Chief

The Nigerian Navy said it arrested over 80 vessels within the last three years for various maritime offences including oil theft.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas, disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the multi-national annual maritime exercise code-named OBANGAME EXPRESS 2019, saying that the vessels were arrested for various acts of maritime illegalities.
