Oil theft: Navy inducts 250 inshore patrol boats

The Nigerian Navy has said it has inducted more than 250 Inshore Patrol Boats as well as acquired more Seaward Defence Boats to check oil theft and other maritime crimes in parts of the country.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, revealed this on Tuesday. He said some piracy attacks occasionally occurred on the Nigerian waters and the Gulf of Guinea which called for more proactive actions by the military and other stakeholders.

Peace returns to Akwa Ibom creeks as ex-militants, police pursue pirates

Fishermen in Akwa Ibom have commended the combined efforts of the ex-militants and a team of amphibious mobile police squad from the office of the Inspector-General of Police, who have worked together to reduce frequent attacks by sea pirates.

The chairman of Mbo Indigenous Fishers Association, Mr Offong Ettekamba, told journalists at Rnwang, Mbo LGA of the state, that there was remarkable peace in the sea within the past two weeks since the amphibious police and some ex-militant leaders took over the surveillance of the waterways.

Navy arrests fishing trawlers for ‘illegal’ activities

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy (NN) have arrested two fishing trawlers for alleged illegal activities in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Nigerian flagged vessels BANALY V and OLOKUN V were allegedly caught with variety of fishes despite being licensed for inshore shrimping. According to Director Naval Information Commodore Suleman Dahun, the vessels were arrested around ANTAN field, 21 nautical miles off the Nigerian coastline, a distance they had no business at.

Navy arrests 11 suspected smugglers, seizes rice, petrol

The Nigerian Navy Ship Victory has intercepted suspected smugglers with 95 drums of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and 692 bags of rice worth over N30m in separate operations.

Naval officials deployed for Operation Swift Response and the newly activated Yangha Mi were among the teams that arrested the suspects.

Nigeria wants to adopt Kenya’s strategy in bolstering maritime security

The Gulf of Guinea is a hub of illegal activities resulting in tremendous threats to global trade and security. It is the most dangerous stretch of sea for pirate attacks over the planet. To overcome the challenge, a two-day International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference took place in Ghana’s capital, Accra. It attracted experts from various countries who discussed the issues of armed robbery and piracy and the solutions. The conference focused on dealing with multiple security-related issues like piracy, illegal fishing, abducting for ransom, illegal oil bunkering and drug trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea.

Coastal communities in Akwa Ibom protest over attacks by sea pirates

Residents of fishing communities in Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday protested over incessant attacks and killings of fishermen and boat owners on waterways by suspected sea pirates.

It was gathered that security agents drafted to protect the waterways were incapacitated to salvage the situation as pirates seemed to have overpowered them.

Navy seeks inter-agency cooperation against piracy

The Nigerian Navy has called for inter-agency cooperation to curb cases of piracy in the maritime sector which affects oil activities, fishing and cargo shipping.
The Commandant of Naval War College Nigeria, Rear Adm. Adeseye Ayobanjo, made the call on Monday in Calabar during the presentation of the report of Naval Warfare Course 3 International Study Tour to the Republic of Kenya.

Ayobanjo explained that participants of the NWC Course 3 embarked on the study tour between June 29 and July 6 with a view for better understanding of Kenya’s operating environment.

EFCC laments incessant oil theft, pipeline vandalism

Ghana: Navy chases pirates

The Ghana Navy is in hot pursuit of pirates who hijacked a vessel from the Tema anchorage and proceeded towards Togolese waters but abandoned the operation midway.

The Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command Commodore, James Kontoh, said this shortly after a Ghana Navy operation rescued five persons, one of them a Ghanaian, from the abandoned vessel. The daredevil hijack mission started with a fishing vessel going missing from the Tema anchorage, having been taken away by the suspected Nigerian pirates who abandoned it later on the Keta high seas.The Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command Commodore, James Kontoh, said this shortly after a Ghana Navy operation rescued five persons, one of them a Ghanaian, from the abandoned vessel.
