Crew of Pacific Warden Released

Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO) has confirmed the release of the seven crew members of the Pacific Warden abducted offshore the coast of Equatorial Guinea on November 20, 2019.

On their release, after 31 days in captivity, the crew were met by senior representatives from SPO. Immediate medical checks and other necessary arrangements were organized, and all have now returned to their homes.

South Africans among seven seamen captured by pirates in Equatorial Guinea

Seven crew aboard a supply ship for the oil industry in Equatorial Guinea were kidnapped when “pirates” attacked their vessel, the oil and gas ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The US oil giant ExxonMobil reported that the supply ship Warden, which it was chartering from the oil services firm Swire, was attacked on Wednesday in the country’s territorial waters, it said.

Our vessel not involved in piracy, C&I Leasing says

The Management of C&I Leasing Plc has said contrary to report by some online media that its vessel, MV Charis, was arrested in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on the suspicion of involvement in piracy activities, the vessel was on its way to execute a recovery contract in Equatorial Guinea when it was hijacked by sea pirates.

The Managing Director, C&I Leasing, Mr Andrew Otike-Odibi, explained this in a statement while commending the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Nigerian Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, Ambassador Toko Ali Gongulong; the Defence Attaché, Navy Captain Seyi Oladipo; and the Spanish Navy, for their intervention and timely release of the vessel.

Pirate attacks continue in West Africa

The Gulf of Guinea has recorded its third ship hijacking this month, with a chemical tanker captured off Togo, as the region continues to see a spike in maritime insecurity.

According to the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting centre, armed pirates boarded and hijacked an anchored chemical tanker at Lome Anchorage on 12 May, holding its crew hostage.

Equatorial Guinea: 10 pirates arrested after attacking a Maltese boat

The Equatorial Guinean military navy has arrested ten pirates who attacked Maltese-flagged ship Malabo on Sunday, freeing 20 crew members who had taken refuge in an emergency compartment, AFP reported on Tuesday. the Equatorial Guinean authorities.

“I congratulate the heroic action of our armed forces” who intervened after “a call for help from a boat (…) attacked by a star with on board ten pirates,” said a statement from the vice- President of the Defense and Security Equatorial Guinean Teodorin Nguema Obiang read Tuesday on state radio.

“Thanks to the swift intervention of our armed forces, (we) managed to save the crew on board and arrest the ten pirates, whose alleged nationality is Nigerian,” he added.

Photos: Spanish Navy Rescues Heavy Lift Ship from Pirates

On Sunday, the heavy lift ship Blue Marlin was hijacked off the coast of Equatorial Guinea. The Spanish Navy and forces from Equatorial Guinea boarded the vessel and secured it early on Monday morning. 

After unloading her cargo in the waters of Equatorial Guinea, the Blue Marlin departed Sunday, bound for Malta. On Sunday afternoon, the ship was approached by a zodiac and forcibly boarded by seven armed pirates. All twenty of the Marlin’s crew members were able to secure themselves in the ship’s citadel, which is equipped with communications gear and emergency rations.
